Eco Friendly Toilet paper – How Green is Your Brand?

seventh generation toilet paper

Now let me get this out of the way here I am not talking about the actual colour of your toilet paper. We today are going to have a little look at buying toilet paper that is not only good for your butt, but it is also very good for the planet. A very interesting article was recently published by Greenpeace who claimed that if every American family would buy just one roll of recycled toilet paper over one of there regular kind that around 400,000 trees would be saved. Even people who do not care about the environment must admit that this is a staggering statistic.

Still though I can in a way see why people are not really that into recycled toilet paper. I mean just the name recycled toilet paper sounds really gross, but recycled and earth friendly toilet paper is much better than you are probably thinking it is.

Of course the material that it is made from will not be as strong or as kind to your behind as the leading brands of non recycled toilet paper. I do not think that even the top manufactures of recycled toilet paper would try and make that claim, but recycled toilet paper these days is closer than ever to being as much like the real thing.

There are many brands of eco friendly toilet paper including seventh Generation I recently wrote a post about seventh generation toilet paper you can check it out here

As well as this to be really green you will want to make sure that the recycled toilet paper you are buying is not treated like regular toilet paper. By this I am talking about how regular toilet paper is treated by chemicals. Think about it regular top brand toilet paper does not become a different jazzy colour, smell nice and be very soft without some chemical tampering now does it?

It defeats the purpose of a company making recycled toilet paper. If they are then going to package it in non recycled packaging that is harmful to the environment. I would say that the majority of the time that most companies do a good job of putting on the package whether or not it is made from recycled materials. So just have a look and I am sure there will be some kind of indication.

I am not saying that you need to get rid of your favourite brand of toilet paper all together. But the statistics of 400,000 saved trees do not lie. So maybe next time you are out in the store. How about instead of buying just one huge multi pack. You pick up two a smaller one that you usually buy and one that is made from recycled parts.

My Guide To Buying Toilet Paper

Yes my fiends you have read this title right. Today I am going to give you guys some hints and tips on things to consider when buying your next pack of toilet paper. If you follow my tips you will not be caught short (sorry for that terrible pun) Before I became a parent and a home owner I never really gave toilet paper a second thought. If I was the one doing the weekly shop I would just grab what one looked the best deal, but when you become a parent and an home owner it really does change your perspective on something as insignificant as toilet paper.

These are vitally important things you need to consider when buying toilet paper.

Cheapest Is Not Always Best

As I am a stereotypical tight fisted Scotsman. I am always looking to save a few bucks here and there. My wife says I would drive a extra 10 miles if it would result in me saving a buck. I used to pick up the cheapest toilet paper on the shelf. You know the kind. Its in the smallest roll in the world. And it feels like sand paper.

However this came at a great cost. You see many of these cheap brands (not all I want to add) have a really tough time disintegrating. This resulted in the drain outside our house getting blocked. And long story short it cost us the better part of a grand to get it fixed. The guy told me that this is not all that uncommon when people use really cheap toilet paper.

Also do not forget when you are using this stuff it hurts like hell!

I found a cool video reviewing Andrex toilet paper. It’s a brand new brand check it out below!

What, Am I Using This Stuff As A Blanket

The amount of commercials for toilet paper is through the roof these days. They are always telling us why they are the best thing in the world. Talking about being quilted. Quilted really? I mean do not get me wrong I am all for comfort, but once I have finished my business last thing I care about is if my butt cheeks are treated to expensive quilted toilet paper.

The moral of this is. You do not need to buy the most expensive stuff on the market. The problem here is that they try and trick you. Every once in a while the top brands (I wont say names as I cannot afford the resulting lawsuit) Anyway some top brands will put there toilet paper on a crazy cheap deal. They do this to try and suck you and once you see how great there stuff is for some (my wife included) there is no going back to the cheapest brands.

Buy In Bulkbulk toilet paper

Before I had a family I would stand in the checkout line at my local store amazed at the people who had big multi packs with 24 rolls of toilet paper What the hell are these people eating I used to think or perhaps they had a kid who needed the empty toilet role’s for a school project. Really it was me who was in the wrong with my little pack of four toilet paper rolls. That in the short term was cheaper, but not in the long.

Since I have had a family we buy these big multi packs all the time. And I swear to god it feels like we go through them all in like a week and that brings me onto my next point.

Train The Damn Kids!!!!!!!!!!kids wasting toilet paper

My kids I am sure waste more toilet paper than anyone else on the planet. The amount they use for each clean up would blow your mind. Its my fault as I have let them do it for so long, but its not to late for you. Tell them until you are blue in the face that each clean up does not require around five full hand full’s of toilet paper.

If you really want to save money on toilet paper the best two things you can do is number one buy in bulk and number two make sure your family is not using to much. I am not saying become some kind of toilet paper police, but there has to be a limit.

Tubeless Toilet Paper – Welcome to the Future!

I know that I raised my eyebrows when I first heard about this. To me this sounded like nothing more than a big fat scam. Where some guy at a toilet paper company needed to save a few buck in manufacturing and thought that he could ditch the tube and then tell everyone this was the next big thing in keeping there butts clean.

Well is it a scam? Or does this actually work and make a difference to toilet paper? Lets have a look shall we.

So Does It Just All Fall Apart?

The answer to this much to my surprise is no. And I was really surprised it took a great deal abuse from tube free toilet papermy three boys. I expected it to just fall apart really and lose all shape. Now towards the end of the roll I will have to say that it did lose a bit of its shape, but if I was not writing this then to be honest I probably would not have been looking at it so closely. Another thing is that it held perfectly well on out toilet paper holder.

Is It Good For The Environment?

One of the main reasons given by manufacturers is that this is great for the planet. And when you hear the numbers it really is. You see In the USA alone a whopping 17 billion toilet paper tubes are thrown out each year. So in this way it is great for the environment, but at the same time some brands are not making the actual toilet paper out of recycled stuff. There are however a few different brands that are making the actual toilet paper out of recycled products. I personally would stay away from the tube free toilet paper that is not recycled as they are blatantly just trying to cut manufacturing costs and could not give a monkeys about the environment.

Is It Expensive?scott tube free toilet paper

Unfortunately I really cannot give this a honest answer. Just like regular toilet paper there are a few different brands. So far since the genius idea of tube free toilet roll was introduced. I know that nearly every time I go grocery shopping that there is some kind of offer on at least one of the brands. So really I would say that its no more expensive, but do not expect to save a ton of money.

Is It Worth It?

If you really want to buy a toilet paper that is green (no not the colour) then buying a good tube free toilet paper that is made from recycled products in both the actual toilet paper and its packaging is a great way to do this. There is no better toilet paper that is as kind to the environment than tube free recycled toilet paper is.

But for the other kinds if you really are accustomed to that nice soft feeling of the leading top brands I really am not so sure. I mean if its cheaper then what the hell go for it, but I do not think that I personally would go out and specifically look for tube free toilet paper.
